Universal Design for Learning

  • Planning for Instruction

    Where do I start?

Here are four possible areas to begin planning a more inclusive learning environment.

    Environment  Classroom Mangement
    Classroom Routines Lesson Development

    Physical Environment

Begin by asking yourself some questions?
    • Does the physical environment provide multiple types of  learners the best learning conditions?
    • Are student materials accessible? Do classroom routines support students' access to materials?
    • Are there areas for students to work collaboratively? Individually?
    • Is there an area and established routine for students to take a break to allow them to refocus on their work?
    • Is there space to incorporate movement in instruction?

    Classroom Routines

A classroom may include 25 people who all have very different ideas on how to complete any given task. If the teacher doesn't establish the routine, then students will create their own. This sometimes leads to tensions. A routine may involve options for completing a procedure but also clearly outlines the limits.

    Classroom Management

Language matters. All language, not just presentation of a lesson but every interaction. Every "great," "good job" and "nice work" is a lost opportunity to reinforce positive, scholarly behaviors.  Use effective, specific language when praising students.
